Classic car itineraries in val d'Orcia Tuscany

Classic car itineraries in val d'Orcia Tuscany

In today's itinerary we are heading south of Siena, through the ancient Via Cassia, the roman paved way connecting Siena to the capital of the Roman Empire. Part of our trip will overlap the Via Francigena, the medieval route beaten by the pilgrims coming from Canterbury heading to Rome.
The Val d'Orcia (river Orcia Valley), this fascinating oasis of nature and culture, is set among acres of olive groves, oak forests and vineyards. The views in this part of Tuscany are striking and the roads seem to have been designed for classic car enthusiasts. The low hills fluctuate on the horizon and their edges are lined with cypresses.

Bella Tuscany Bellissima Umbria

Bella Tuscany Bellissima Umbria

Right after having visited the charming town of Cortona, eastern Tuscany, close to Arezzo, we'll put our classic convertible to a good use heading to the Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. The roads next to the lake shores enjoy a beautiful view on the calm village of Castiglione del Lago, overlooking the lake. Next we'll be visiting Perugia the stunning capital of this region and Assisi where Art and Spirituality are closely tied in a number of sublime masterpieces.

Cortona clinging on a steep hill overlooking the Lake Trasimeno has clear Etruscan origins. The most striking aspect of this small town is the elegance of its buildings and the sense of discovery when you walk in its narrow, steep streets. The best suggestion here is to take your time, relax and enjoy your visit without rush, something the Cortonesi are very good at.

Discover the Chianti food & wine culture

The Chianti region with its hilly countryside of incomparable beauty lies in the very heart of Tuscany. Chianti is the result of a true love of people for their countryside. The manicured vineyards that cover hill after hill are a festival for the eye. The taller hills have medieval castles built on top of them, or secluded abbeys or sumptuous villas. The best way of discover the Chianti region is a classic convertible. The laid back and inspiring roads are far away from the traffic congestion which we are used to these days. And there is no better way to enjoy the views, the sounds and the smells of this area of Tuscany.

The Chanti region stretches from Florence to Siena, and there are two main roads crossing it, the Cassia, and the Chiantigiana. We will opt for the latter as being more rural and scenic. Throughout the Middle Ages, Chianti saw the continuous fights and war between Florence and Siena to impose their control on the area, until 1555 when the Medici imposed their hegemony on all of Tuscany. This long time feud is still very well alive today, after 5 centuries. Have a chat with a Florentine or a Sienese and the rivalry will sparkle.
